Moving is consistently ranked as one of life's most stressful events — right up there with starting a new job or having a baby. But it doesn't have to be. With the right preparation, the right team, and a clear plan, moving day can be calm, organized, and even satisfying. Here's everything you need to know.

Start packing earlier than you think
Most people underestimate how long packing takes. A 2-bedroom apartment that looks manageable can easily take 15–20 hours to pack properly. Start 3–4 weeks before your move date, tackling one room at a time. Begin with rooms you use least — guest bedrooms, storage areas, basement — and leave the kitchen and daily essentials for last.
Label every box on the top and at least one side. Include both the contents and the destination room. Future-you will be grateful when you're tired at 9pm and just need to find the coffee maker.

Declutter before you pack
Every item you don't pack is one less item to move, carry, and unpack. Go room by room and sort everything into four piles: keep, donate, sell, and toss. Be ruthless. If you haven't used it in a year and it doesn't have sentimental value, it probably doesn't need to come with you.
Selling unwanted items online or at a garage sale a few weeks before your move can also offset moving costs. Donation centres like Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity ReStore often do pickup, making it easy.

Protect your fragile items properly
Dishes, glassware, mirrors, and artwork need more than just newspaper. Use proper packing paper or bubble wrap for anything breakable. Dish packs — double-walled boxes designed for kitchens — are worth every dollar
